Terms of Use
Last updated: 2026-10-13
These terms cover the Practice Hanzi iPhone app and this website (together, the “Service”). By creating an account or using the Service you accept them. If you do not, please do not use it.
Who runs the Service
Practice Hanzi is operated by Xijing Art (Shanghai, China). Questions go to support@practicehanzi.com.
What Practice Hanzi is
An app for learning Chinese characters: writing practice checked stroke by stroke, spaced-repetition review, a dictionary, textbook vocabulary, page scanning and pronunciation scoring. It is a learning aid; it does not certify a level and does not guarantee an exam result.
Your account
You can sign in with Apple, with Google, or with an email address. Keep your access to it safe; you are responsible for what happens under your account. One account per person; please do not share it.
Free and Premium
The free plan includes HSK 1 to 3 and their textbook chapters, writing practice, review, a daily goal, up to 50 cards, 3 study lists and 10 dictionary searches a day. Premium opens HSK 4 to 9 and every textbook, removes those limits, and adds page scanning, pronunciation scoring and writing-canvas settings. What each plan includes can change; we will not remove a Premium feature from a period you have already paid for.
Subscriptions bought in the app
- Premium is an auto-renewing subscription, monthly or yearly, sold through Apple's App Store. The price is shown in the app, in your currency, before you confirm. It varies by country.
- Payment is charged to your Apple ID when you confirm the purchase.
- The subscription renews automatically unless you turn off auto-renew at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Your Apple ID is charged for the renewal within the 24 hours before the period ends.
- The yearly plan may start with a free trial for eligible new subscribers. It turns into a paid subscription at the end of the trial unless you cancel at least 24 hours before it ends.
- Manage or cancel any time in your iPhone's Settings, under your name, then Subscriptions, or from Settings → Manage subscription in the app. After cancelling, Premium stays active until the end of the period already paid.
- Refunds for App Store purchases are handled by Apple, at reportaproblem.apple.com. EU and UK consumers keep their statutory rights.
- Bought Premium on another device or reinstalled the app? Use Restore purchases in the app's Settings.
Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement also applies to the app. Where it and these terms differ on something they both cover, these terms apply to the extent the law and Apple allow.
Subscriptions bought on this website
If you subscribed on practicehanzi.com rather than in the app, Stripe bills you and you manage or cancel the subscription from your account on the website. Write to support@practicehanzi.com for a refund within 7 days of a charge.
Acceptable use
Do not scrape, overload or attack the Service, try to get around the free plan's limits, share gift codes publicly, or use the Service to harm anyone. We may suspend an account that does.
Content and ownership
Dictionary data comes from CC-CEDICT (CC BY-SA 4.0); stroke data from Make Me a Hanzi and hanzi-writer-data; the hanzi typeface is LXGW WenKai (SIL Open Font License). Textbook names and covers belong to their publishers and are shown to identify the books the app supports. The app, its design and its original content belong to Xijing Art. Your study data belongs to you.
Liability
The Service is provided as it is, without warranties beyond those the law requires. We are not liable for indirect damages, and our total liability is limited to what you paid us in the 12 months before a claim. Nothing here limits liability that the law does not allow to be limited, including for gross negligence or wilful misconduct.
Changes and ending
We announce material changes to these terms by email at least 7 days before they take effect. You can stop using the Service and delete your account at any time from the app's Settings.
Governing law
These terms are governed by French law. Disputes go to the competent courts in France, without affecting the consumer protections of the country where you live.
